In my opinion there are many people who think that they just have to live with headaches. The majority of headaches (more than 40%) are categorized as tension headaches. I cannot recall a tension headache that has not positively responded to chiropractic / fascial treatment. What chiropractors are doing is reducing the tension wherever we treat.
Most headaches have their origin in the neck / shoulder region. Cervical or upper thoracic manipulation combined with fascial treatment to the surrounding soft tissue always has great effect – often a miraculous effect!
Migraines can be a bit more complicated but most of them can be helped using the same measures. A chiropractor often treats a migraine globally – meaning looking at a wider spectrum to get an effect, such as treating the low back or mid thoracic part of the body.
This can be caused by several different things, here I am only explaining the bio-mechanical reason for it, which is also the most common:
Located in and around contracted tissue are a myriad of sensors. These sensors, called proprioceptors will change their information if pressurized or pulled. They change from sending true information to the brain about movement within the tissue, instead sending false information to the brain. But not only false information, also in a quantity that that part of the brain cannot cope with – too much information! The same as can happen to a data center when too many people are sending messages at the same time. You get chaos, which in the human body is causing confusion and misinterpretation of the incoming data and the dizziness results…
Lower back pain can be caused by a number of different dysfunctions; it could be a mobility problem with a lumbar joint and the associated disc – usually lumbar 3,4 or 5. It could also be a mobility problem with the pelvic and hip joints. These will need to be mobilized with chiropractic manipulation, but also the fascia connected to these areas needs to be manipulated back to its elastic state.
All lumbar joints as well as disc problems and pelvic dysfunction including the hip joints are in my opinion a result of tight and contracted fascia. Discs, by the way, are connected to fascia and can be treated with fascial manipulation.
Merely treating the fascial tissue next a vertebral joint with its disc can mobilize and normalize the movement of the vertebral joint and reduce the swelling of the disc.
Whiplash injuries are extremely important to deal with. Many people have suffered such injuries to a greater or lesser degree. Most whiplash victims have not received sufficient treatment after an accident, which has left them with chronic damage to mostly the neck and upper thoracic spinal areas.
Many victims that I see have never received treatment to the front of the neck and throat only to the back side. Whiplash can give you equal damage to the front as well as the back of this important area.
The front side, with the large and powerful Sterno-Cleido Mastoideus muscle, which turns the neck, and the smaller and numerous Scalene muscles on the side of the neck. These must be examined for contractures and shortening. If this is left untreated it can give several serious symptoms apart from “just” headaches and migraines.
These areas are treated with soft tissue technique like fascial manipulation with great effect.
Most people present with not just one problem, but rather with two or more….
The usual presentation is one very painful one and another one that they have more or less gotten used to having and have learnt to live with as they have been told by their medical doctor.
These problems are usually connected though and should be treated simultaneously.
If not treated at the same time I can be sure that the person, once they have gotten rid of the problem they presented with, will have the other one or two problems surface right after the first one is treated. They are basically coming from the same source….the fascia.
The fascia envelopes and invades all structures from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet, so all problems stem from the same source, and have to be treated globally, not locally.
